For the first project this year, I introduced pinching and pulling clay by creating Dinosaurs and their Eggs. We used the technique of creating a pinch pot by first rolling the clay into a ball, pressing our thumbs in for a hole, and then using our pincher fingers to pull that hole larger. This creates the sides of the pot, or in our case the egg, and then the sculptors used tools to make it look life the broken half of an egg.
Then the sculptors were given another piece of clay to make our dinosaurs from. I demonstrated a very simple dinosaur where I pinched and pulled arms, legs, and tails. We talked about different ways to modify my demonstration to make specific dinosaurs, like tyrannosaurus, triceratops, or pterodactyls.
The next class we painted them. They were given the choice of natural colors (green, yellow, red, brown) or fantasy colors (pink, blue, purple, white) since science has not proven what colors dinosaurs actually were.
